/ Abstract

Human specie has always engineered the environment to set the conditions for its own settlement, producing in its evolutionary development superorganisms (cities) and the necessary networks of connections among them. Instead of rejecting cars as an extraneous object to a picturesque nature, this project starts from a perspective in which cities and technology are the metabolic extension of human specie and therefore a necessary part of its own nature; the vessels (vehicles) for human transportation, or better, the vehicle-host symbiotic system thus becomes a necessary part of

human ecology, and so the network of connections upon which they live, operate and interact with: infrastructures.

The project of an environmental enhancer for the Nogara mare highway in Veneto (Italy) provides the unique chance to bring together ecological thinking, host interaction and active materials. Its location (an open country planar area among cultivated fields) enucleates as critical variables the impact of pollutants and the phenomenon of dazzling.

With respect to such criticalities, the project uses digital generative and parametric strategies to generate a performative structure in which densification and rarefaction of elements is a local morphological response to dazzle.

The structure itself acts as a scaffold for a photo catalytic PET based material that, mimicking the behavior of coccoluti (marine microorganisms) is able to reduce CO2 (and potentially other pollutants) to salts and nitrates that are then naturally deployed to the neighboring cultivated fields as fertilizers. The material has been tested for photo catalytic integration and is currently under development. Present building and production techniques privilege the industrial assembly of inert materials, with a one-way flow of energy and process from raw material to finished product. Instead of this mono-directional energy consumption the project promotes the continuous exchange of information (as code and matter-energy) at all levels and from the digital to the material domains: use of dazzle information, morphogenetic rules and structural behavior to generate the scaffold, a photo catalytic material that responds to pollutants and produces fertilizers, making the structure symbiotic with their hosts and the environment.

Grazie alla possibilità fornita da Rachel Armstrong ho potuto vedere le protocellule in azione, hanno un tempo di reazione molto veloce, si cibano di CO2 presente nell'acqua della Laguna di Venezia e la trasformano in carbonato di calcio, la stessa reazione compiuta da delle piccole alghe di nome Coccoluti.
Le protocellule assumevano forme circolare di un colore bianco latte e se molto vicine tra di loro si fondevano accrescendosi.

I saw the protocells in action, the reaction was very quickly and the protocelles ate the CO2 into Lagoon water and produced a calcium carbonate.
The protocells were round shaped and the colore white like milk, if close to eachother, the protocells fused togheter.

Gli oggetti sono stati cotti con lo script di Giulio Piacentino per Grasshopper e esportati in illustrator.

A little script in Illustrator for swapping stroke and fill of many objects which compose the gradient surface, that is exported from Rhinoceros.

Il modello protocellulare che è stato ricreato, in questo caso, con un sistema di goccioline di olio in acqua e glicerina, dimostra alcune proprietà dei sistemi viventi, pur non possedendo nessun tipo di DNA come forma di informazione. Il dinamismo di queste protocellule, mostra un sistema di auto organizzazione e comportamenti complessi. Questo test è stato possibile grazie alla ricetta fornitami da Rachel Armostrong.

The protocell model, in this case an oil in water and glycerin droplet system, demonstrates some of the properties of living systems despite not possessing any DNA as a form of information. The protocell in this case is dynamic, self organizing and exhibits complex behaviour.

Il progetto di ricerca del materiale verrà sviluppato con la collaborazione della IV D dell'istituto Fermi di Modena coordinati dalle professoresse Brunella Balestrazzi e Domenica Maurizi e con la partecipazione dei dottori in chimica industriale Piero Bruschi e Andrea Baschieri.

La ricerca esistente riguardo materiali con attività fotocatalitica e capacità di fissione degli inquinanti è mirata verso l'uso del biossido di titanio. I primi test saranno sull'osservazione del comportamento del biossido di titanio.

The material research project will be developed in collaboration with the class IV D of the Fermi highschool in Modena, with the help of teachers Brunella Balestrazzi and Domenica Maurizi and the contribution of industrial chemistry doctors Piero Bruschi and Andrea Baschieri.

Current researches, on photocatalytic materials that can undergo pollutants fission, are focused on the use of titanium dioxide. First tests will be developed on the observation of his behaviour.

Caratteri percepibili di Legnago.

Legnago.

Il comune di Legnago è la città di riferimento insieme a Cerea della provincia Veronese.

Si colloca in una posizione strategica tra le città di Verona, Mantova, Rovigo, Vicenza, Padova e Ferrara; questo le consente di essere in una comoda posizione di interscambio strategico della bassa veronese.

Il comune si inserisce in un cotesto paesaggistico, semi-naturale o agricolo, anche se pur segnato dai forti interventi di trasformazioni urbane e infrastrutturali.

La peculiarità di questo territorio consiste in ampie zone adibite a culture intensive e seminativo, attraversate da un sistema idrografico complesso e tutt'ora fortemente usato, che trova nell'Adige il suo asse principale.

La stessa Legnago è attraversata dal Canale Bussè e si colloca all'interno dell'ampio territorio denominato "Valli grandi Veronesi".

Lo sviluppo.

In un quadro generale Europeo di politiche economiche, che pongono l'interesse di sviluppare e potenziare al massimo il corridoi 5 (collegamento Lisbona-Kiev) vede nell'Italia il "trait d'union"; attraversata per l'intero corridoi padano.

Il potenziamento delle infrastrutture vede nelle province di Verona e Rovigo un nodo importante attraverso la realizzazione della Nogara-Mare, opera con la finalità di alleggerire il carico della A4 (Milano-Verona) e di facilitare il collegamento tra la Brennero (A22) e A13 (Bologna-Padova).

Legnago si colloca tra una delle più attive città del Veronese nell'esportazione nazionale ed internazionale; per questo motivo la realizzazione della Nogara-Mare consentirebbe una maggiore accessibilità al comune e alle sue imprese.

Ciò in previsione porterà un potenziamento produttivo e edilizio rilevante all'interno di Legnago, oltre che potenziare alcune connessioni importanti, come quella con l'ospedale.

Lo svincolo.

L'autostrada determina forti impatti soprattutto a sul piano paesaggistico e ambientale; l'aumento della mobilità porta aumento di inquinanti, di rumore e innesca delle dinamiche urbano-sociali molto importanti.

All'interno del percorso autostradale lo svincolo si pone come luogo connotato da alcune criticità, quali: rallentamento, attesa, immissione, questo provoca maggiori concentrazioni di inquinamento.

L'andamento della Nogara-Mare nei pressi del casello di Legnago è di tipo Ovest-Sud-Est determinando nelle due direzioni periodi di abbagliamento durante la giornata.

Ambizioni del progetto.

La connotazione reale dell'opera pone, l'interesse a sviluppare un progetto che ponga l'importanza dell'intervento sull'ottimizzazione di livelli performativi quali (abbagliamento, aumento inquinanti e mobilità) nel nodo dello svincolo e del casello di Legnago.

L'obbiettivo di questo progetto è quello di definire una morfologia di addensamento e di intreccio che incorpori tutte le esigenze infrastrutturali dell'opera (cartellonistica, barriere protettive, centri di emergenza, casello, indicazioni luminose); che crei gli spazi funzionali adibiti a casello e che ottimizzi le performance di abbagliamento e inquinamento.

Legnago’s perceivable features.

Legnago.

The Comune of Legnago is one of the major areas, along with Cerea, of the district of Verona.

It is located in a strategic position between the cities of Verona, Mantova, Rovigo, Vicenza, Padova and Ferrara; this makes Legnago a city in a good position for strategic interchanges in the lower Verona district.

The area sits in a semi-natural or agricultural landscape albeit marked by strong interventions of urban and infrastructural transformations.

The peculiarities of this territory are the large areas dedicated to intensive farming thanks to a complex and still operative hydrographic system which relies on the river Adige.

Legnago itself is crossed by the Bussè canal and is located inside the territorial system called “Valli grandi Veronesi”.

The development.

In a general European scheme for economical politics which trie sto maximise and develop the so called “Pan-European Corridor 5” (linking Lisbon to Kiev) Italy is the vital link which is constituted by the corridor of the Po Valley (Pianura Padana).

The development of infrastructure around the districts of Verona and Rovigo finds one of its focal points in the realization of the “Nogara-Mare” artery which will lighten the traffic burden on the A4 (Milano-Verona) and will improve the link between the A22 (Brennero) and the A13 (Bologna-Padova).

Legnago is one of the most active towns in the Verona district for national and international export; for this reason the Nogara-Mare would create more access to the Comune and its businesses.

All of this, in the future, will create an increase in productivity and building construction within the Legnago area as well as improve existing connections such as the one with the hospital.

The junction.

The motorway has strong impacts on the landscape and the environment: the increase of mobility results in an increase of pollution, noise and is a starter of important socio-urbanistic dynamics.

Within the motorway path the junction is at present a place marked by problematic issues such as: delays, waiting times, inlets and high concentrations of polluting substances.

The orientation of the Nogara-Mare at the Legnago exit is west-southeast which results in heavy solar glare on both directions during the day.

This project’s ambitions.

The real purpose of the project puts its interest in the development of an intervention which will improve performing levels (solar glare, polluting substances and mobility) of the junction and the Legnago exit.

The goal of the project is to define a condensation morphology and interweaving which will incorporate all the infrastructural needs: signaling, protective barriers, emergency points, tollbooths and luminous signs. At the same time it will have to improve sun glaring and polluting performances.
